There is a palatial resort called Paradise City on an island off Incheon, an hour’s drive from Seoul, that this winter hosted the K-pop wedding of the year, if not all time. Taeyang , Big Bang’s vocalist, and Min Hyorin , a beloved actress, singer, and model, exchanged vows in a quiet ceremony attended by family and close friends (bandmates G-Dragon , T.O.P., Daesung, and Seungri; labelmates CL and Sandara Park ), before pulling out all the stops for the lavish reception. Succulent vines and white flowers hung from the ceiling over silver candelabras, and vivid forest scenes were projected against the white walls. This romantic vision applied to the wedding dress, as well: a stunning confection from Oscar de la Renta. “Wearing a wedding dress is something you do once in your life, so it was very important that it was a representation and reflection of me,” Min shared exclusively with Vogue. She hoped to work with designer Laura Kim, who is also Korean, and after sensing an “immediate connection,” the team set to work on creating a sketch at Min’s personal request. After some back and forth, Kim and co-creative director Fernando Garcia proposed a series of delicate silk thread poppies embroidered across the gown, which would echo the blooms Min had chosen to decorate her reception. It took 240 hours to complete in the New York atelier: 10 yards of white Italian silk faille and those buds cascading across the bodice and skirt. Individual petals and stamens lifted up and off the dress here and there to add dimension, while the strapless top resembled a full scalloped flower. On a cold January day, Kim arrived in a private studio space in Gangnam to meet with Min for the fitting. “As soon as I saw it, I knew it was my dress,” Min said.
